Rowing a seaworthy slide seat rowboat that lets you use the combined power of your legs, core and arms strengthens your body and reinforces your soul.
Doctors and health professionals recommend slide seat sculling because it is a low impact, full body exercise. It uses up to 90% of your muscles, including both legs at once to initiate the stroke, with no stress on the knees and burns twice the calories as jogging. Perfect for cardio, weight control, cross training, rehab or just having fun. To learn more about slide seat sculling or perhaps how to teach yourself to row check out our How To Slide Seat Row video by Olympic gold rower Adam Kreek.
This Classic Whitehall Spirit® Tyee 14 sculling rowboat can row in conditions that are way too rough for a racing scull or even an open water shell. In calm water the smooth long glide is amazing for a boat of this size. There is ample room for a friend or two and even the dog to come along. A speed of 3 to 5 knots (6 to 9 km/h) can be maintained for hours with little to no strain on the rower.
The slide seat sculling model of the Tyee 14 features the standard attractive lapstrake-style planking called ‘clinker’ back in the day. Almost anyone can row this boat without difficulty. The hull is slightly wider and fuller than a Classic Whitehall Spirit® 14 which is why it holds more people and carries a heavier load.
A large stowage locker is built-in and accessed through a hatch on the foredeck. This is great for stowing such items as small gas tanks, tackle boxes or lifejackets to be left aboard and kept dry and secure. On the top of this foredeck is a perfect spot for the dog to lounge.
This boat is fitted with one removable sliding seat unit with hinging bronze outriggers. These ultra-tough manganese bronze riggers fold inboard and make coming alongside a high dock safe and simple. This also makes boarding and exiting the boat much easier.
The slide seat unit will install or remove in minutes. Without the slide seat unit the boat is a traditional oars-on-the-gunnel fixed seat rowboat perfect for carrying one, two, three or four persons, for family fun or use as a yacht tender. The Tyee 14 is also well suited for fitting an outboard motor such as the Torqeedo electric outboard or other small motor on the transom. If this is a consideration, be sure to include the motor pad factory option on your order.
This boat is set up for standard 9’6” (288cm) sculling oars. We stock and can supply Club Style carbon fiber sculling oars that can be shipped along with your boat.
If you require traditional oars we supply the best available. There is a choice of Spruce/Carbon Traditional Oars with Leather collars and pressure cast oarlocks or all Carbon Fiber Traditional Oars with plastic collars and offset oarlocks.
This Classic Whitehall Spirit® Tyee 14 is right at home on the deck of a yacht, at the cabin, on a trailer in the garage or parked on a dock. If stored outside perhaps on Dock Bunk, or a Boat Dolly, or a small boat trailer exposed to weather, fitting it out with Lexan battens and a fitted Sunbrella cover are recommended. If tying to a dock is part of the scenario, consider adding a set of tie-up lines and fenders to your order.
The Tyee 14 is available with the factory option of either a removable solid teak floorboard system or a fully buoyant floor called the Ocean Tender Floor factory option is available. This buoyant floor option adds substantial extra reserve buoyancy, a further safety feature, handy for when the boat is used as a ship’s tender or shore boat. With no one aboard, simply pull the drain plug and the boat self-bails.
Other factory options include a stainless steel keel strip or a custom name on the transom.
Maintenance involves cleaning the teak and applying a coat of exterior teak oil and requires only about three hours per year. See the article on Care, Storage & Maintenance of your Classic Whitehall Spirit® boat.
Brian O’Sullivan, who uses a Whitehall Spirit® Tyee 14 as the ship’s tender on his 70’ Hatteras, reports:
“Our Tyee 14 gets a lot of use as a slide seat rowing boat for exercise, a rowing fishing boat, and as a sailboat.” Brian reports that it’s “become the ship’s favourite and offers hours of fun every day for the whole family.”
