The Whitehall Spirit® 17 Expedition is the flagship of all the Classic Whitehall Spirit® boat models. This extraordinarily beautiful boat is meant for exploring, camping, or heading out for a nice row or a delightful day sail. Wherever it goes, when there’s people around, it always draws a crowd that stops to admire its fine lines and elegant appearance.

This boat will float in only 6 inches of water with its bronze centreboard and kick up rudder fully retracted. This means it can sail or row into quiet, unexplored, uncrowded spots that are not accessible by large craft. It’s totally beachable for landing ashore, setting up camp, or exploring the shoreline. It’s easily towed on a small trailer by almost any small car for highway travel and off road trips.

Sailing

As with all Whitehall Spirit® models, the sailing gear is quick and easy to set up or remove without the use of specialized tools. The mast simply lifts out of its reinforced support socket. The mainsail boom includes a bronze clew outhaul tackle. The mast is two-part in Sitka spruce fitted with a carbon fiber sleeve and meticulously varnished. Being able to break into two parts enables compact stowage inside the boat. It is 6″ longer than the regular 17′ sailing models mast so it can accommodate the roller furling light air jib. This light air jib mounts on the removable teak bowsprit and furls from the cockpit.

The boat can be sailed with the mast set up free standing, however an included feature are Spectra running backstays with a deadeye styled backstay tensioner offering better headstay tension, sail shape, and windward sailing ability. Jiffy reefing gear on the mainsail is standard. The mainsail can also be reefed while out on the water. The fixed seats are removable to provide more space when sailing if desired.

Sculling

For those who desire a low-impact, full-body workout, in slide seat sculling mode the layout is virtually identical the Whitehall Spirit® Slide Seat Sculling Model. The Expedition 17 model includes two slide seat sculling units with bronze hinging outriggers. The slide seat units can be removed or installed in just a minute or two when needed. Slide seat sculling is so smooth and enjoyable in this model it is the kind of activity that owners often do for many years on a regular basis. If sculling oars are required, we stock and can supply Club Style carbon fiber sculling oars.

Traditional Rowing

With the fixed seats installed the boat now becomes a three-position traditional rowboat that also can be rowed by one, two or three people. If you require traditional oars we supply the best available. There is a choice of Spruce/Carbon Traditional Oars with Leather collars and pressure cast oarlocks or all Carbon Fiber Traditional Oars with plastic collars and offset oarlocks.

These can be shipped to you along with your boat. The aft or center fixed seat rowing stations work great for when rowing alone. Three people rowing at once is a fun family activity. This boat will cruise along at 5 to 6 knots (10-12K), looking quite amazing to any watching from ashore.

This Classic Whitehall Spirit® 17 is right at home on the deck of a yacht, at the cottage, on a trailer, in the garage or parked on a dock. If stored outside and exposed to weather, on a Dock Bunk, Boat Dolly, or a small boat trailer, fitting it out with Lexan battens and a fitted Sunbrella cover is recommended to keep it looking good.

Expedition Whitehall 17 Interior, Whitehall Rowing and Sail

Classic Whitehall Spirit® 17 Expedition Sailing and Sculling Rowboat

Marie Hutchinson and Harold Aune entered the Raid Finland Regatta in 2005 with one of the early Expedition 17 models and raced for a week with a fleet of 21 boats from all over the world sailing and rowing through the Finnish Skerries. The rules were simple with no motors of any kind, only wind and human power allowed. They produced the one-hour documentary movie Whitehall Rowing & Sail at Raid Finland that shows the Whitehall Spirit® Expedition 17 in action.

What People Are Saying

Harold Aune says:
“At one point in the Raid we were sailing downwind in heavy wind gusts and we had the Whitehall surfing and planning at over 14 knots! We were outrunning the waves in a wild roller coaster ride but managed to stay in control. It was a blast to zoom past the heavier keelboats which were faster than us beating upwind.”

Terry Mutter says:
“To me the Whitehall Spirit 17 Expedition is the epitome of adventure. I love that I can configure the boat for an afternoon picnic cruise for 4 with several folks rowing, going out for a sail, getting some exercise sculling, or combine all 3 configurations and adventuring out on a weekend camping trip to an island.”

The hull is hand-laid fiberglass, impeccably finished inside and out. The woodwork is solid teak finished in hand-rubbed oil, meaning maintenance is not an issue, and will require only about three hours per year. Copper rivets and roves are used on the gunnel, and the metal fittings are custom-cast bronze. The photo album below shows close-up details of the fine workmanship.

The woodwork is hand-picked solid teak, usually bookmatched. It is hand-rubbed with three coats of our special outdoor oil – teak does not require varnish finish. The mast and boom are made from clear, tight-grained sitka spruce and coated with three coats of marine-quality varnish.

This boat can achieve speeds that are considerably greater than its hull speed when sailing off the wind.
