FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AN OLYMPIC ATHLETE AND TWO ATLANTIC ROWING CHAMPIONS, ROW WHITEHALL’S REVOLUTIONARY NEW ROWBOAT AT THE DIABALO POINT RACE IN CALIFORNIA APRIL 19
Victoria, B.C. March 24, 2009 ….. Canadian Adam Kreek, four-time world rowing champion and winner of a gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics is taking on another challenge. This time he’s heading up the newly minted Team Whitehall at the Diablo Point rowing race April 19 in Sausalito, California.
Other members of the team include elite endurance rowers Brad Vickers and Jordan Hanssen from Seattle Washington. In 2006 Vickers and Hanssen along with two other rowers set the speed record for rowing across the North Atlantic in 72 grueling days.
Allan Calder the latest member to join the Whitehall team will represent the oldest rowing club in North America, San Francisco’s South End Rowing Club founded in 1873.
Instead of rowing in a traditional racing shell, Adam and the other team members will be competing in a revolutionary new “hybrid” rowing boat made by Whitehall Rowing and Sail of Victoria, B.C. The Whitehall Spirit Solo 14 features the slide-seat speed advantage of a racing shell, in a classic Whitehall, designed especially for rough water rowing.
The race is likely to feature rough water. The course runs out into the open Pacific under the Golden Gate Bridge. Here’s where the Whitehall Spirit Solo 14 will shine as its designed to handle rough water conditions more safely than a racing shell and is virtually unsinkable.
The 8-mile long Diablo Point race is an annual event hosted by the Open Water Rowing Center of Sausalito. This year’s event features a special 8AM start just ahead of the regular fleet, which last year attracted 72 open water racing shells and one Whitehall Spirit Solo 14 rowed by Californian, Doug Gilmour. Gilmour is known as a traditional rowing specialist and also is joining the Whitehall team for the race.
“I can’t wait to race with this exciting new rowing boat design,” stated Kreek. “It is the perfect combination of a traditional rowboat and a racing shell. It is very stable and also very durable. I have used it for exercise in up to 6 foot waves and also to set my crab traps.”
Whitehall rowing and Sail owners, Harold Aune and Marie Hutchinson, are promoting rowing, particularly slide-seat rowing, as an ideal way to get out on the water and enjoy a full-body workout. It is a green, clean, quiet adventure afloat with no oily footprint.
“Just like the introduction of the Mountain Bike opened up biking to a whole new level, the Whitehall Solo 14 slide-seat rowing boat offers anyone the ability to keep fit while rowing in all kinds of water- whether ocean, river, lake or harbour.” stated designer Harold Aune.
Harold, whose other interests include film making, will be at the Diablo Point race, camera in hand to record the event for posting on www.whitehallrow.com and on YouTube.
