While learning to sail one can simply row out
to clear water and practice unobstructed. A sailboat that
is also a good rowboat is undeniably a safer craft.
Sailing models are fitted with a modern adaptation of the
Standing Lug, a style commonly found on craft of this size
before the 1900s. This traditional salty looking rig is
well suited for smaller boats for a variety of reasons.
A larger sail area is possible with the Standing Lug rig,
providing more power and speed. The sail is also carried
on a much shorter mast which is free standing. The heeling
moment (tendency to tip) is greatly reduced with the lower
centre of effort making steering and boat handling easier,
more comfortable, and safer. Not to be confused with a “dipping
lug” this rig can be tacked without lowering the yard
or shifting it from one side of the mast to the other. The
sails are easy to hoist and set up; they can also be dropped
or lowered when under way.
