OARS FOR ROWBOATS

*Pricing Below

These oars are built out of Sitka Spruce, the most favored wood for oar construction, which provides light weight and strength. The right pair of oars is governed by a few factors. A boat used for short trips in crowded waters where manoeuverability is important requires easily handled non overlapping short oars. Novice rowers will find getting their moves down a lot easier with shorter non-overlapped oars.

An oar acts as a lever pivoting around the oarlock. The longer the length inside the boat the longer the lever hence more power with less effort. Maximized power necessitates overlapped oars. Long distance rowing, carrying large heavy loads, and, to a degree, enjoying the stroke action once its learned will favor longer overlapped oars.

Qualicum Straight Blade

Length 7’-7’6” and 8’ A utilitarian oar suited for rough usage. The blade edges are blunt and not easily damaged. Marine varnish finish.

Laminated Spoon Blade

Length 7’- 7’6”and 8’- Our most popular oar. Spoon blades give a little more “bite” on the water producing more drive. The blade is laminated. The finish is marine varnish.

Leather Collar
Made of top grain vegetable tan leather 1/8" thick for its superior resistance to wear. Hand stitched with waxed lacing twine. The oarlock stops, commonly called "buttons" are fastened with marine grade adhesive and 3 copper canoe nails. A final coat of silicone based leather sealer helps keep them dry and protected.
Plastic Collar
Injection molded plastic collar by Scotty. Lasts indefinitely. Efficient and inexpensive.
Oarlocks
We tried several manufacturers before realizing pressure casting was needed for this most important component to successful rowing. These custom manufactured oarlocks are guaranteed not to break.

Open Water Sculls
These custom open water sculls are well suited for any of the slideseat models. The narrower spoon blade is great for rougher conditions and are tougher than racing sculls. Built of spruce and ash laminate they are light and strong and impart a live feel to the stroke. This “liveness”is actually the feedback to the rower from the pressure of the stroke with a feeling of a crisp springback. The buttons are fully adjustable. Grips are soft rubber. Marine varnish finish. Length 9”6” Weight 11 lbs.
